James Alexander Holden emigrated to South Australia from England in 1852.In 1856 he started a saddlery business in Adelaide. They became involed with car upholstery, and, like many early pioneers in car manufacturing the company evolved, from a buisness associated with horses and carraiges, to horseless carraiges.Much later, like Jaguar, they evolved from motorcycle sidecar bodies to cars. Based on chassis from other manufacturers. The company thrived but suffered badly in the great depression.Subsequently the company was taken over by General Motors in 1931.
